21st International Science Conference
WISENT IN THE ROMINCKA FOREST
September 5 – 6, 2024
GOŁDAP
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honor to invite you to the twenty-first international meeting, which will take place at the Lupus hotel in Gołdap, a town with health resort status.
Gołdap lies on the border of three territories of former Baltic tribes: the Nadrows to the north, the Galindians to the south, and the Yotvingians to the east. From Gołdap to the east stretches the Romincka Forest, divided by the border with Russia. In the winter of 2021, after an absence of several hundred years, wisents returned to the Romincka Forest. A group of eight animals were brought from the Borecka and Knyszyńska forests and released into the wild after a few weeks of acclimatization. An adult bull from the Knyszyńska Forest decided to emigrate to neighboring Lithuania for a longer period of time, but returned last fall. The herd in the Romincka Forest, under the careful care of the Gołdap Forest District, confirms the appropriateness of the choice of place with its behavior.
The conference is organized jointly with the Gołdap Forest District and the Warsaw University of Life Sciences.
We want to enjoy the success, but also start a discussion on what to do next and answer the question of what protection the European bison needs.
I look forward to seeing you there
Wanda Olech
President of European Bison Friends Society
